TEAM BFF

Every girl needs a best friend like you...

Team BFF are volunteers with previous experience working with Girls on the Run and are wanting to give a little more time and commitment to growing the program to reach more girls across the metroplex.  As the program has grown, tasks have been identified that can be completed in 1 - 2 hours per week that will support the efforts to keep the organization running smoothly, reach out and assist coaches when needed and help with the suprise that comes along from time to time!

If you are interested in volunteering send an email to the Volunteer Coordinator:

What are the requirements for coaches?

Coaching is our most popular volunteer position and also one of our most challenging! Each class must have a Head Coach and at least one adult as an assistant in attendance at each class session.  All coaches complete an application and interview with GOTR staff.  For each volunteer working with the program, a background check will be conducted.  Training is provided to head coaches, as well as, all supplies needed to conduct each class.  It is not required for Assistant coaches to go through the training but it is highly recommended.  On their own, head coaches obtain their CPR & First Aid Certification.

What are the hours of the program?

Typically the classes are after school which is very convenient for the parents.  However, the classes can be held in the evening if the needs of the potential participants indicate this works best.  Also, safety and lighting will need to be considered for an evening class.

What is the time commitment for a coach?

Head Coaches are required to be in attendance at each 1.5 hour long class and wait until all girls are picked up.  There is also preparation time prior to the class to understand and be thoroughly familiar with the class topic and games which can vary.  Since all supplies are provided there is very little time involved in making game pieces.  In all, coaches should expect to spend about 5 - 7 hours per week on their class.  Additional time is required at the end of the season as coaches participate in the 5K and prepare the end of year celebration for the girls and their families.  The celebration does not have to be elaborate and usually a simple party is best with the focus being on the girls accomplishment and completion of the program.

At least once per season there will be a mid-season coaches meeting with GOTR staff to discuss any potential problems and improvements in the program delivery.  Coaches are very welcome and encouraged to participate in the other activities of GOTR such as expos or fundraisers but their priority is their class.

How do I identify an appropriate location?

The location for the GOTR class should have an area similar to the size of a track for the girls to run.  The surface should be as flat as possible and clear of debris.  Parks, fields or school playgrounds are examples of potential locations.  The class should have access to water, restrooms and shelter in case of sudden bad weather.  If an evening class, the area should be safe and well lit.  Permission will need to be obtained from the authority involved and if needed, GOTR staff will assist in negotiating with these individuals.
